An address history is the least glamorous thing in a person report and quietly the most useful. Nobody gets excited about a list of old apartments. But it’s the one field that ties everything else together, and when something is wrong, this is usually where it shows.
It isn’t a list of houses
Think of it as a timeline rather than an inventory. Each address has a rough date range attached, and the value is in whether those ranges make sense next to each other and next to what the person told you.
Someone who says they’ve been in the county since 2019, whose records place them two states away until last autumn, has either a good explanation or a problem. You don’t know which yet. That’s fine — the point of the check isn’t to convict anyone, it’s to know which question to ask.
Moving a lot is not a red flag
This gets misread constantly. People move for jobs, for school, for a relationship, for a cheaper lease, for a parent who got ill. Six addresses in eight years describes a very ordinary life, especially for anyone under thirty-five.
What matters is coherence, not stability. Two current-looking primary addresses in different states at the same time, with no explanation. A gap of four years where the person appears nowhere at all. A brand-new address that exists only because they told you about it. Those are the shapes worth noticing.
The mixed-file problem
Here’s the failure mode that catches careful people. You search a name, you get an address history, you read it, and it belongs to somebody else with the same name.
Common names make this likely, but it happens with uncommon ones too — a father and son sharing a name, two people in the same city, a records system that merged two files years ago and never unmerged them.
The defence is to never accept a name match on its own. Before you rely on an address timeline, check that at least two other identifiers agree: a phone number, an email, an approximate age, a known relative, a middle initial. If they don’t line up, you’re probably reading a stranger’s life and drawing conclusions from it.
Records lag, and they lag unevenly
Different sources update at different speeds. Property records show ownership, not residence — someone can own a house in one state and live in another quite legitimately. Court records often carry whatever address was on file when the case opened, which might be a decade old. Utility and identity data refreshes at its own pace.
So an old address hanging around isn’t evidence of anything. It’s just how the plumbing works. Give the person room to explain a discrepancy before you decide it means something, because most of the time it means a database is slow.
What it’s genuinely good for
Two things, mainly.
First, corroboration. When the address trail agrees with the phone number, the email and the name, you have four independent things pointing the same way. That’s much stronger than any one of them.
Second, knowing where to look. Public records in the United States are organised by county and state. If you only search where somebody currently says they live, you’ll miss everywhere else they’ve been. The address history tells you which jurisdictions are worth checking.
What it can’t do
It says nothing about character, reliability, or how someone will behave next Tuesday. A person with one address for twenty years can still be the wrong person for the situation. A person with nine addresses can be completely straight.

Reading it in one place
You can build an address timeline by hand across county sites and property databases. It’s slow and the pieces arrive in no particular order, which makes contradictions easy to miss.

That’s the whole argument for it. Not more data. The same data, close enough together that you can see it disagree with itself.
